Court grants Deepika Rajawat anticipatory bail in case over tweet
10/28/2020 11:53:22 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct, 28: A Principal Sessons Judge at Jammu has allowed the anticipatory bail plea preferred by Advocate Deepika Rajawat in the case registered against her over a tweet posted on the occasion of Navratri
The order was passed today by Judge Sanjeev Gupta. Having gone through the arguments made in the matter, the Judge opined that Rajawat deserved interim protection from arrest in this case.
Accordingly, the Judge has directed that if Rajawat is arrested, she is to be released on interim bail till the next date of hearing, subject to furnishing surety and personal bond to the tune of Rs 50,000. Rajawat has also been asked to cooperate with the probe.
Senior Advocate PN Raina appeared for Rajawat before the Court, assisted by Advocate Alok Bambroo.
Rajawat's October 19 tweet, which sparked a furore amongst sections of social media, is the following:
In relation to this tweet, Deepika Rajawat faces an FIR under Sections 294 (obscene acts), 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) and 505 (B)(2) (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
Before the Court, Rajawat asserted that, contrary to the allegations levelled in the FIR, the picture tweeted out is neither an abuse of the Hindu religion nor does it hurt the sentiments of Hindus.
In her plea for anticipatory bail, Advocate Deepika Rajawat had submitted that the BJP IT cell gave "communal colour" to her tweet. She had stated that the tweet in question aimed to highlight the increasing number of rapes in the country.
