Parra’s arrest creates ripples in PAGD
Alliance leaders in quandary, turn mute
11/25/2020 11:21:13 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 25: Arrest of PDP leader Waheed-ur- Rehman Parra by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has put the entire spectrum of the Gupkar leadership under cloud.
Leaders heading Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties— are in a dock over whether to oppose the government action or to remain silent.
A senior functionary whose party is one of the signatories of the Gupkar alliance said that Para’s arrest has created ripples within the PAGD camp. It has even put the PDP leaders in a quandary. “It is a matter of national security now and the arrest of the leader whose party is part of the Gupkar alliance is worrisome to the core,” said the leader.
It was informed further that the Gupkar constituents are going to adopt a “wait and watch policy” over Parra’s arrest and it is likely that differences may emerge between various parties and PDP over the issue. National Conference and other political groups, according to sources, have decided not to join the chorus.
Prior to his arrest PDP youth leader Para was questioned at NIA office in New Delhi for two days.
It may be recalled that in January this year Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Devender Singh, along with Hizbul Mujahideen commander Naveed Babu besides a lawyer were arrested when they were on way from Srinagar to Jammu. On June 19, the suspended DySP managed to get the bail, while the NIA stated that it was investigating another case against Devender Singh.
Interestingly, in the year 2018, then Governor Satya Pal Malik had stated in an interview that when Mehbooba Mufti was the J&K chief minister, the recruitment of militants witnessed a spike and also those pelting stones too found it easier to attack the security forces.
His revelation had also given a subtle hint at the possible reasons why BJP in New Delhi was compelled to withdraw from the PDP led government in J&K in 2018.
