Resentment in Congress
11/27/2020 12:16:54 AM

Veteran Congress leader and former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad questioning the very structure of his party has brought to fore the resentment which is brewing within the Congress.
Azad has stayed away from active politics since the day he was dropped from the list of national office bearers of the party. The former J&K chief minister not taking any interest in the political developments taking place in Jammu and Kashmir is an indication that he has already given up and he may have other things in mind.
The Congress high command sending a SOS to the party leaders in J&K to remain cautious proves it beyond doubt that the party’s top leadership fears that others may join Azad and the party may get split in the union territory.
The grand old party of the country is facing the worst crisis and its leaders don’t know how to react to the situation. The old horses have been sidelined and they are waiting for a chance to make their presence felt once again.
Azad not taking any interest in the forthcoming District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir has made the Congress Party weak in the newly carved out union territory. The party is in disarray and it’s completely dependent upon the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) for its prospects in the DDC polls. The party has entered into a seat sharing agreement with the Kashmir centric PAGD and has humbly accepted the seats that have been offered to the party.
The Congress Party in Jammu and Kashmir is at the crossroads and is at the verge of losing its relevance. Everyone is aware of the fact that in Kashmir the party has struggled from the very beginning so it’s not likely to win that many seats. On the other-hand everyone knows that Jammu has slipped out of the Congress’s hands and many of its leaders and workers have already shifted their loyalties.
Azad demanding change in party’s structure could be a beginning of a revolt within the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. The former J&K chief minister has many loyalists in the union territory and if he wishes he can spring any surprise.
The Congress high command has a reason to get worried as Azad is no small leader and he cannot be ignored. So the party should be prepared to face any situation which can emerge in coming days.
