Early Times Report

REASI, Nov 27: A Junior Engineer (JE) of Public Works Department (PWD) in this district is alleged to be working in connivance with a contractor and in lieu of the same he gets 50 percent share of the works being carried out by the said contractor.
Early Times has learnt from sources that the contractor and the JE have over the years carried out many works in the district and the profits are shared by the two on 50:50 basis. This is despite that most of the works have turned out to be faulty ones with allegations of sub-standard material being used by them.
“The JE and the contractor have carried out various works in tehsils like Pouni, Ransoo and Reasi tehsils of the Reasi district. The payments for the said works have already been drawn and the two have shared the same on equal basis. The bills for the said works were prepared by the JE and he passed the same without any fail and no cross check,” said sources.
Sources said that it has come to the fore that sub-standard material has been used by the contractor and the JE in some works in the Pouni, Ransoo and Reasi tehsils. They said that some of the retaining walls constructed by them have been damaged and in some others big cracks have come up.
“The contractor has of late alleged that the JE is influencing him like anything and he is not in a position to run away from the deal. The labour as well as machinery for the different works is hired by the JE himself. The senior officers of the department are also under the pressure from the JE for the reasons best known to them,” said sources.
They said that black topping carried out by the duo on a one kilometer road length in Sudeen Panchayat has caved in and the road has developed pots as well as ditches on the stretch. Sarpanch of Sudeen Panchayat, Neelam Kumari Sharma has demanded vigilance probe in the matter so that the truth comes out in front of the public.
Superintending Engineer Udhampur-Reasi said that since the matter has been brought into their notice they will hold a probe adding that if found guilty action would be taken against the concerned Junior Engineer.
