LG Sinha closely monitoring security arrangements for DDC polls

SRINAGAR, Dec 3: Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Lt Governor Manoj Sinha is closely watching security arrangements for the ongoing District Development Council (DDC) election.
The maiden DDC polls are under process along with by-elections for panchayats and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
Official sources informed early times that from the first day of polling, Sinha has stressed upon the security agencies, officers to ensure free, fair, transparent and peaceful polls.
He has emphasized on providing sufficient security to the participating candidates besides ensuring maximum participation of the people in the DDC polls and by-elections to vacant panchayat and municipal seats, sources maintained.
“People must be facilitated during these elections so that they would feel secured to cast their ballot on the polling day,” Sinha has said.
Sources said that the senior security officials are in close contact with the LG over the arrangements made to ensure the smooth conduct of polling.
Sources said that the LG has asked the security agencies to ensure arrangements for conduct of the third phase of DDC elections and Panchs/Sarpanchs by-polls in a smooth and peaceful manner.
Regarding the SOPs related to COVID 19 pandemic, the LG has urged the people to follow the guideline besides wearing face masks and maintaining social distance during polling.
Sources said that the LG has asked the health department to ensure sanitizers, thermal scanners and face masks at the polling stations.
According to the Election department there are a total 280 constituencies in the UT of J&K (14 in each district) out of which voting will be conducted in 33 constituencies, including 16 from Kashmir Division and 17 from Jammu Division, from 7 am to 2 pm in phase III.
Officials informed that there are a total 305 candidates in the electoral fray including 166 from Kashmir division and 139 from Jammu division for DDC elections in Phase III. Out of 305 candidates 252 are male whereas 53 are female candidates.
Regarding Sarpanch by-polls, officials said that out of 126 constituencies, polling shall take place in 66 constituencies and a total of 184 candidates are contesting in phase III including 144 male and 40 female candidates. 40 Sarpanch constituencies have been filled unopposed.
Similarly, in Panch by-elections, he informed that there are 1738 constituencies, and out of them 798 have been elected unopposed. Polling shall take place in 327 constituencies and there are 749 candidates in fray.
