SKUAST-J fails to develop farming technologies for dryland
12/3/2020 11:38:42 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Dec 3: Notwithstanding the expenditure of crores of rupees on research work, the research center of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies (SKUAST) Jammu failed to develop farming technologies for dryland agriculture in Jammu region.
Sources told Early Times that in order to cater to the technological requirements of rain-fed areas of Jammu region, SKUAST Jammu has been carrying out research on dryland agriculture at one of its Research Stations.
“Although the Research Centre has been operating on a long term and the expenditure of Rs 6 crores has been incurred on it since 2008 but neither any drought resilient varieties nor any technologies for dryland farming could be developed by the Research Centre due to lack of planning and monitoring,” they said.
They further informed that even the recommendations based on experiments conducted as per the technical programme of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) were yet to be passed on to the Extension for publication and wider dissemination among the farmers community thus the Research Centre had not been able to transfer any technology for the benefit of dryland farmers since its inception.
“Various technologies were at different stages of development and would be available after consolidation and validation. It is also being expected that progress on some varieties has been going on and likely to be released in next 2-3 years,” they said.
