Govt forms ‘tree authorities’ for Municipal Corporations Jammu, Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 3: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday formed five-member tree authorities to ensure the preservation of all trees within the jurisdiction of Srinagar and Jammu Municipal Corporations.
As per the order issued by General Administration Department which reads, “Sanction, in terms of Section 342 of J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, is hereby accorded to the constitution of Tree Authorities for the Municipal Corporations of Jammu and Srinagar”.
The order further reads that Mayor Municipal Corporation, Jammu will act as a chairman for tree authority for Municipal Corporation, Jammu while as Deputy Mayor, Municipal Corporation Jammu, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Jammu, Divisional Forest Officer, Urban Forestry Division, Jammu and District Horticulture Officer, Jammu will act as members.
While, Mayor Municipal Corporation, Srinagar will act as a chairman for tree authority for Municipal Corporation, Srinagar while as Deputy Mayor, Municipal Corporation Srinagar, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Srinagar, Divisional Forest Officer, Urban Forestry Division, Srinagar and District Horticulture Officer, Srinagar will act as members.
Headed by Mayor of the respective corporations, the ‘tree authorities’ has been also tasked to obtain a declaration from all owners or occupants about the number of trees in their lands, to specify the standards regarding the number and kind of tress in each locality and type of land and premises.
The authorities have been also tasked to assist private and public institutions connected with planting and preservation of trees and undertake such schemes or measures as may be directed from time to time for achieving the objectives of these provisions.
