Repeated landslides on NHW Udhampur- Chenani stretch make life miserable

UDHAMPUR, Jan 7: The repeated landslides on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NHW) Udhampur-Chenani stretch has made life of the locals miserable as even a slight rainfall triggers a road block for hours together.
The issue is also sowing resentment among the users of this road especially after the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has started toll plazas at different places on the different NHWs in Jammu region.
Sources informed that the particular stretch which repeatedly gets blocked by slides on Udhampur-Chenani road falls in Udhampur-Ramban NH project undertaken by Gammon company which had started its work in the year 2015 having the deadline of 2018 which was not honoured and was extended repeatedly with the latest till March 2021.
Though sources claim that about 60-70 percent work on the project is complete yet the repeated sliding in rainy days raises eyebrows.
"Work is not being done as per the plan due to which landslides have become a chronic problem," a college student opined.
Advocate Rahul Jandial, said such sliding disturbs locals and hinders their daily chores and also disturbing the people who commute on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway especially tourists who come from outside J&K for enjoying different tourist places of J&K like Patnitop, Nathatop, Bhaderwah and various locations in Kashmir Valley.
"The government and concerned construction agencies should take a note of public harassment and make some tunnel or find other alternate way to free from landslides so that the locals or other passengers may heave a sigh of relief," he maintained.
Many other locals have appealed to the J&K Lieutenant Governor to intervene into the matter so that public may get a relief.
When contacted NHAI Project Director, Udhampur-Ramban, Parshotam Kumar said project is going as per plan but certain things like natural calamities can't be stopped.
He assured that if some change will be needed in the project they will look into it.
