Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 9: Director Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (ICAR-CITH) today issued an advisory for Orchardists to combat harmful effects of heavy snowfall.
In a statement issued here, the CITH said, "Due to Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation and confluence or interaction of south-westerly and south-easterly winds causing an extreme weather conditions and therefore Kashmir division has witnessed heavy snowfall from 3rd January to 6th January, 2020 leading to accumulation of heavy snow cover in orchards across the valley. This can cause heavy physical damage to the plants in general and upgrowing leaders in particular. Accumulated snow will lead to heavy water logging detrimental to the plant health. Thus in order to safeguard the orchards in the valley following measures need to be taken immediately:
Gently and carefully remove the snow cover over the tree canopies with due care to scaffolds. In case of apples HDP remove the snow from the leader and other scaffolds of tall spindle system without breaking the leader. Also thin-out the leader from top to avoid the accumulation of snow and bending and/or breaking of the leader. Snow may be removed from newly planted trees and nursery plants with gentle shaking to avoid topple down," the statement reads.
"Trees fallen due to snow should be lifted and repositioned with proper staking/support. If roots get exposed cover them with soil and position & support the plants properly Snow should be removed from polyhouses/greenhouses and other structures to avoid any kind of loss. Proper drainage should be done to avoid water logging which can be harmful for the tree's health.
If the main tree trunk is split in two parts and skin is still intact then fix it by using nail nut bolts or tying to avoid permanent damage to the trees. Farmers being our priority it is requested to keep proper ventilation at your home while using heating systems to avoid asphyxiation - Your Health is Our Priority," it added.
Meanwhile Director Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (ICAR-CITH), Srinagar, Dr Desh Beer Singh said that the recent farm laws namely Farmer's Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and facilitation) Act 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 will help the stakeholders including farmers and consumers in bringing the price stability by creating competitive market environment.
In a statement, the Director said, "These laws will prevent the post-harvest losses and wastage of produce that happens due to lack of storage facilities. Before these laws middlemen were playing a role in selling the farm produce in APMC mandis and now after implementation of these laws the farmers will be free to sell their produce in APMC mandi or any other seller of their choice to get appropriate price of their produce even at their doorstep," he said.
