Former J&K chief minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah stating that he is unsure about his future as a politician shows the confusion prevailing in his mind.
In an interview to a private news portal, Omar said that it was not easy to reconcile with what was done to Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 and he was struggling with question of continuing in politics and has lot of doubts and no answer.
It seems Omar is having after thoughts now. If he had to quit the politics he should have done it when he was released last year. After August 5, 2019, Omar and his colleagues have tried everything to remain relevant but things have not worked out for them.
Kashmir centric parties coming together to form Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) also proved to be a failed experiment. The cracks that have developed within the PAGD are too wide.
Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah were under the impression that they will dominate the political scene in J&K after forming the PAGD but it has not happened. The PAGD constituents are up in arms against the National Conference leadership and don’t want to accept father-son duo as their leaders.
If Omar Abdullah wants to quit the politics, no one will stop him as his contribution to Jammu and Kashmir or even his own party has been nil. When the Kashmir centric leaders were detained after the abrogation of Article 370, people didn’t stage even a single protest against to seek their release. People not seeking their release proved it beyond doubt that they don’t enjoy any mass following and they were no representatives of the people. These politicians should have said goodbye to politics soon after that.
If Omar Abdullah has realized that he is no leader then he should opt for some other career rather than giving statements that are aimed at hogging the headlines. Not many people will mind him taking voluntary retirement.
If he wants to stay in active politics, then he has to change his mind and thinking. He needs to stop bothering about what happened on August 5, 2019. He should realize that India has changed and in “New India” autonomy and other ideas have no takers. J&K has merged completely with the Union and no one can challenge it. Now, it’s for Omar to decide what he wants.
