Choked drain near Shivaji Chowk annoys residents, solution still far away

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Jan 17: The locals putting up in and around Shivaji Chowk area in Nanak Nagar are grappling with the problem of a blocked drain from Shivaji Chowk to J&K Bank Branch, opposite Shiv Mandir for the last more than two years.
The choked drain, according to the residents, has become a source of nuisance for them as it not only emanates foul smell while the dirty water filled with garbage flowing in it spills on to the road every now and then.
However, their strenuous and constant efforts to resolve the issue have yet to bear any fruits as they are only getting assurances for the redressal of the issue and no productive results so far.
The residents of the area informed Early Times that the particular drain got clogged due to the encroachments over it by few shopkeepers of the area who have constructed ramps illegally on top of the sewer thereby completely blocking its opening. “As the drain had been encroached on various points over the last few years, it has become impossible to desilt it as a result of which the garbage keeps on accumulating inside,” they said, adding that the piling up of rubbish inside the drain obstructs the smooth flow of waste water which frequently spills onto the road as and when the drain gets overflowed. “We even lodged a complaint with the Grievance Cell of the J&K Government but nothing concrete has come out except few directions to the Jammu Municipal Corporation including dismantling of concrete slabs/ ramps built over the drain so as to get the drain desilted,” said a resident of the area, Sanjay Gandotra. “However, no action has been initiated in this regard by the Corporation. People hope that some positive steps will be taken sooner than later so that they could get some respite from the nuisance being caused by the clogged drain,” he added. Sanjay Gandotra, who is vigorously pursuing the issue at every possible forum in order to get it resolved, informed that he along with few other locals made a representation before the concerned authorities to construct a deep drain for a permanent solution to the problem.
“We approached the authorities with a request to construct a deep drain from Shivaji Chowk to J&K Bank branch so that the matter gets resolved permanently but citing shortage of funds the work has not been started for the last more than a year. The UEED has chalked out an estimate of Rs 31.87 lakh to execute the work in January last year,” said Gandotra.
