How Pakistan Fooled Kashmir since independence till now?
Ankush Verma1/19/2021 10:51:34 PM
Since independence of India Kashmir remained an issue of conflict and dispute between India and Pakistan. This conflict started nearly 74 years ago, when the fight for Kashmir began to heighten in 1947, when British India was partitioned into present countries of India and Pakistan. This resulted into the creation of three major ethnic areas namely Ladakh in the northwest which is majority Buddhist; the Kashmir Valley which is majority Muslim and Jammu which is majority Hindu. Although, Kashmir was free to accede to either Pakistan or India, but Kashmir was attacked by Pakistani tribesmen in October 1947. Maharaja Hari Singh asked India for help and in return agreed to accede to India.
Pakistan even signed a standstill agreement with the Kashmiri Hindu ruler of that time, Maharaja Hari Singh, which basically meant it agreed to its status as it was. However, a few months later, Pakistan broke that agreement and helped Pashtun invade the region, eventually sending its own security forces to Kashmir in a bid to take over the valley.
In 1948 India took the matter to the United Nations security Council and thus, a five-member commission was constituted by the name of United Nation Commission for India and Pakistan. This commission after analysing the ground situation came up with the resolution where three conditions were made necessary. Under the first resolution Pakistan was asked to take his military back from Kashmir, secondly it asked India to keep only those number of soldiers on the border which are required to administer the region and rest should be withdrawn and lastly UN offered to play the role of mediocre. But Pakistan did not remove its army which irked the commission.
Then in 1965, Pakistan moved its army to launch a secret mission called Operation Gibraltar which involved military officials infiltrating the valley and attempting to create a rebellion from within by mixing themselves with the locals. However, Operation Gibraltar failed to rouse the local population, and instead India launched a counter-offensive, forcing Pakistan to retreat. Paradoxically, every year on September 6, Pakistan marks its 'Victory' over the Indian army invading its territory in 1965 just to create the illusion among its people of taking Kashmir under its control.
Since then, Pakistan always harped over Kashmir before the international community but this has not yielded any result for it. Because the international community knows about the inability of Pakistan to administer the region of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir which is already under its control. In order to bring Kashmir under its control it also waged wars against India where it was defeated badly by Indian forces. But forced by its erring nature, it sponsored militancy in Kashmir and violence became their tool. These Pakistani sponsored militants terrorised and killed many peace loving Kashmiri Pandits and also forced them to flee out of Kashmir to Jammu and other parts of the country. These militants also targeted and killed the leadership of pro-India groups and intensified the Pakistani militancy in the region. During that time, it also intimidated India of using nuclear weapons but India was prepared to solve the matter peacefully.
Then in 1999, once again tried to infiltrate the valley using its military which led the Kargil war where also it was vehemently defeated.
Pakistan never learns from its defeat and mistakes, and thus in the following decades, Pakistan based militant groups carried out terrorist activities not just in Kashmir but also in mainland India. This has worsened the condition in Kashmir rather than improving it which reveals Pakistan's dual standards where it claims to champion the Kashmir cause but also funds terrorist activities to maintain the conflict and instability in Kashmir.
But Pakistan is illusioned with the idea of taking Kashmir back from India and for that it uses all bad and violent means. It totally ignores the fact that since its own economy has dwindled and is totally dependent on the aid from the foreign countries how it will be able to administer the additional population of 80-90 lac people. The economic conditions of the people in Pakistan are very meagre where around 80 million people live under the poverty line. Whenever the people of Pakistan raise their voice against the widespread corruption, illiteracy, unemployment and lawlessness, the political leaders divert them towards the issue of Kashmir and keep them busy with the illusion of acceding Kashmir to Pakistan. And keep asking the world to wake up to the Kashmir Conflict and also project itself as the champion of the Kashmir cause. But the world should not overlook the role played by the Pakistan in Kashmir tragedy.
The incidents of human rights violations in POK are not unknown to the world. Pakistan has always kept the people in POK aloof from their political and civil rights. If Pakistan is sincere about the Kashmir cause and cares for the wellbeing of its people, then it must first demonstrate its commitment at home. It can do so only by putting an end to rights abuses and letting Kashmiris decide their own fate. Only then will the world take Pakistan's concerns about Kashmir seriously.
