Why Lewandowski Deserves the FIFA Best Player Award
1/21/2021 2:45:43 PM

Robert Lewandowski has had a season to remember with Bayern Munich as the 32-year-old won the prestigious 2020 FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Award. It was his second major accolade in 2020 as the Polish striker also bagged the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award.

Lewandowski was honoured by FIFA for his impeccable performance in the Bundesliga and Champions League with Bayern Munich. More impressively, he outclassed the last year’s winner Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo to be crowned as the best player in Europe and the world for the 2019-20 season.
A Historic Treble for Lewandowski

Lewandowski’s incredible season saw him score an astounding 55 goals in 47 matches while providing 10 assists for the Bavarians. He finished the Bundesliga season as the top scorer with 34 goals - 6 more than Timo Werner who then played for Borussia Dortmund.

He won the Golden Boot race in the German Cup as well, scoring 6 goals in his 5 appearances in the tournament.

Needless to say, football betting sites must have had a field day with the punters who looked to capitalize on Lewandowski’s brilliant form in the season.

But the most impressive statistic of it all is his performance in the Champions League. With 15 goals and 6 assists in 10 matches, he was undoubtedly the best forward in the competition in the 2019-20 season. The only other player who came close to it was his counterpart from Borussia Dortmund Erling Haaland with 10 goals.

It is worth mentioning that Messi and Ronaldo were simply not in the race, understandably so, given the season and their respective club’s performance. Secondly, Lewi is the second player in the world (after Johan Cruyff) to have won the elusive European treble while being the top goalscorer in all three tournaments.

Coming back to the Pole’s incredible run, he scored in 9 consecutive Champions League matches, with his streak ending only in the final game against Paris-Saint Germain, where Bayern Munich won 1-0.

During his season in Europe’s top-flight football competition, the Polish striker also made history and set a new record. In the Group Stage, Bayern Munich thrashed Red Star 6-0, courtesy of Lewandowski’s 4 goals in a mere 14 minutes. By doing so, he scored the fastest quadruple in the Champions League history.

Clearly, there is a bevy of records set of Lewandowski in his trailblazing season with Munich. With his first treble and first European Cup in a remarkable fashion, it comes as no surprise to see why he deserved the FIFA Best Player of the Year Award.
The Fire Rises

The Munich striker has done well to carry the same form in the 2020-21 season. He has scored 22 goals already in 17 appearances between Bundesliga and the Champions League so far. With two hat-tricks already, he is possibly on the path to emulate his run from the previous season.

But it is yet to be seen how far the Bavarians will progress. There is a tight race in Bundesliga with RB Leipzig closing in on the 2nd place, trailing just 2 points shy of the league leaders. In the European Cup, they will face Lazio in the Round of 16, but the race can get tighter thereafter.

Whatever may be the case, Lewandowski will continue to be a crucial component in driving the German side forward.
