| Balwant Thakur gets additional charge of Education in addition to Culture | | |

Jammu, Jan 21: Balwant Thakur who is currently the Cultural Diplomat of India to South Africa has been assigned the additional charge of Education as well. His role of responsibility will also include the Government of India's educational initiatives in South Africa in addition to culture. India has a huge educational initiative to develop bilateral relations in South Africa. India offers over 900 scholarships for the students of African countries for their study in India. These scholarships are offered for study in undergraduate, graduate, post graduate and doctorate courses. The Government of India has also established 69 Chairs of Indian studies abroad to create a greater understanding about India and Indian civilization amongst the global community and thought leaders.
An accomplished cultural administrator, Balwant Thakur was appointed as the Cultural Diplomat of India to South Africa in 2019 and is currently heading the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre based in the city of Johannesburg. In the past over one year he created a record of holding over one hundred International cultural events in South Africa. Prior to this he worked as Secretary J&K Academy of Art. Culture and Languages for over 8 years and Regional Director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations for over 6 and half years.
Being the in charge of education in South Africa, Balwant Thakur will have the mission to establish India as the ultimate educational destination and make India a global hub of education. As of Now India has 907 universities and 50,000 higher education institutions with enrollment of 33 million students. The Indian higher education system is the third largest with USA and China being the first and the second respectively in quantitative terms.
