EARLY TIMES REPORT
jammu, Jan 23: It seems the never ending struggle of the citizens of Jammu region for giving separate identity to the Agriculture University won't end soon.
The varsity is running under the name and title of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu for the past many decades. This has hurt the sentiments and the identity of Dogra people.
The faculty members of the university, who had led this fight for the justice to give separate identity to SKUAST Jammu, with aim to provide identity, which such name, signify the Jammu region and its culture.
The hope of the faculty members and senior citizens of Jammu had risen first time when SP Malik was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir where the demand of the rechristening of SKUAST-JAMMU as Jammu Agricultural University was put up. "We were very hopeful that BJP in the Centre will help to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu by conceding demand but nothing happened. Similarly after J&K's transition into a Union Territory, the demand was put before the then Lieutenant Governor, who was close aide of PM Modi could not do anything. Now the same demand has been put before the incumbent LG," they said.
They further said that the common name of two varsities in the same Union Territory is creating a lot of controversies and confusions among the masses as such Jammu Agricultural University is very essential for its separate identity at UT / National level and also this name is easily pronounced and easily identified at global level.
"The people who fought for making this Institution as a separate asset of Jammu still doesn't fit with the nomenclature assigned to this agricultural varsity as farming community, civil society and intellectuals of Jammu region are of the opinion that they shall be identified by the name that itself represents all the cultures and values prevailing in their region and their identity can be recognized at International level," they added.
