GDC Neeli Nallah Udhampur Celebrates International Mother Language Day

Udhampur, Feb 21: International Mother Language Day was celebrated at Government Degree College, Neeli Nallah Udhampur with a day long programme. To mark the occasion, an online webinar was organised for the students by Sh. Mohan Singh, a Dogri writer cum social activist of J&K. The deliberation was well received and joined by 98 participants. The main aim to invite such talk was to promote and popularise mother language among youth students. Sh. Mohan Singh emphasised on the importance and necessity of Mother language and on not mixing up mother tongue with religion. He also hailed the initiative of the college in organising International Mother language Day on a grand scale. The webinar was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) Satinder kour, Principal of the college. She emphasised that in the face of the aggression of foreign language (parricularly English) in a globaliser era, mother languages are on the verge of extinction. The concerned societies must remain vigilant and refrain from unnecessary interpolation and Code -Switching which have the potential to kill the essence and beauty of Mother Language. The formal welcome address was delivered by Dr. Radha, Convener of the event and Assistant Professor of Dogri.
After the webinar the students of the college participated in the offline poetry recitation and singing competition. Isha Devi, student of Semester I secured first prize, Mansi Verma, Sem I secured second prize and Sonika Devi, Sem III secured third prize. The winners of the respective categories were given away the first, second and third prizes and were dispersed after giving refreshments. The formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Kamal deep Kaur, Assistant Professor of English.
