Farooq Abdullah urges Centre to initiate talks with Pak to end terrorism in J-K

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 21: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Sunday appealed to the Central government to initiate dialogue with Pakistan in a bid to end terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Recalling former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s remark, Abdullah, the Member of Parliament from Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre must speak to its neighbouring country.
“It’s true that terrorism still exists. They are wrong when they say that it has ended. If we want to end terrorism, then we must speak to our neighbours.
I remember Vajpayee’s remark that friends can be changed but not neighbours,” National Conference leader as saying.
“I appeal to them (Central government) to speak to them (Pakistan) to find a way as they spoke to China and they (PLA troops) started withdrawing (from LAC),” he added.
Abdullah’s remarks came a day after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti made a similar appeal to the Centre to ensure peace and tranquillity in the Union Territory.
“Till when will people of J-K, Police and jawans be sacrificed. BJP says repeatedly that Pakistan sponsors violence here (Jammu and Kashmir) then they (Centre) should start the dialogue process - be it here or with Pakistan,” Mufti had said.
Mufti had made these statements when she met the family members of the Police constable Suhail Ahmad who was killed in Friday’s terrorist attack.
On February 19, two policemen were killed in a terrorist attack in Srinagar’s Baghat area of Barzulla. In another encounter on the same day, three terror associates were also killed in the Budgam area of the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.
One police personnel of Jammu and Kashmir lost his life and another was injured in a separate encounter that broke out between the security forces and terrorists in Budgam district on February 19.
