To spoil Azad’s chance to re-elect from Gujarat, Cong high-command gives walkover to BJP
2/21/2021 11:49:54 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 21: Congress high-command gave severe blow to party stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad by deciding not to field any candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat.
After Congress high-command’s ‘unexpected’ decision, two BJP candidates are likely to declared elected unopposed on Monday which is last date of withdrawing nomination papers.
Reliable sources said that Azad hoping that party high command would field as party candidate one of the two Rajya Sabha for which elections were scheduled to be held on March 1. “Azad was hoping to get mandate for the seat which fell vacant after demise of Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel”, sources said and added that instead of fielding any candidates Congress high-command decided to give a walk-over to arch rival BJP.
As reported earlier by the Early Times, “Being a Muslim face of the party Azad will stake his claim on the seat which fell vacant following death of Ahmed Patel”.
Sources said Congress high-command was find it difficult to digest how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s has praised Ghulam Nabi Azad during a speech to bid farewell on Azad on expiry of his tenure as member of the Rajya Sabha. “It is believed that it is all due to Prime Minister’s praise that Congress high command has decided to give walkover to BJP rather than providing an opportunity to Azad to get re-elected to the Upper House of the Parliament”, sources said.
It is widely believed that due to his experience as Member of Parliament, BJP leadership would help Azad to get re-elected in the Rajya Sabha but Congress leadership spoiled his chances.
The Congress has 65 MLAs in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, decided not to field any candidate.
After decision of the Congress not to field any candidate, two BJP candidates namely Ram Mokariya and Dinesh Anavadiya are set to get elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.
