Transporters to observe indefinite strike from Feb 24
2/22/2021 11:20:54 PM

EArly Times Report

Jammu , Feb 21
All Jammu and Kashmir Transporters Association (AJKTA) called for an indefinite strike from February 24th while demanding immediate rollback of taxes and a hike in fare rates.
While adressing media perosns here today Jammu Transporters Welfare Committee President Vijay Singh said, “Our strike is indefinite as the government has failed to redress our genuine grievances. We observed a one-day token strike on 6th Jan 2021 and the government assured us that our demands would be fulfilled within one week, but till date nothing has been done,” reads the statement.
“We have submitted the cost of operation in the office of transport commissioner for revision in passenger fare because the rates of petrol and diesel are increasing day by day. Passenger fare was revised in April 2018. At that time the rate of diesel was Rs 65 per litre, but today the rate of diesel is Rs 82 per litre. It is a big increase and causes us immense loss which transporters in J&K cannot bear now,” the transporters said.
"We are not interested in going for an indefinite strike, but the UT government is forcing us to do so. The inconvenience to the general public/ student community caused due to the strike is the responsibility of the government,” the transporters added in their statement.
The soaring petrol prices are giving a tough time to both the transporters as well as common people. According to the transporters, the strike would be observed by all segments of the transport sector including tanker owners, auto drivers and cabs across Jammu and Kashmir.
