Innovative Farmers Conference concludes at SKUAST

JAMMU, Feb 24: Two days Innovative Farmers Conference on "Farmer Led Innovations for Enhancing Farm Income"concludes at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu. Prof. J.P. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST - Jammu was chief guest on the valedictory function of the conference. Speaking on the occasion he expressed his happiness and satisfaction on successful completion of two days conference. He said that conference was first of its kind in J&K where the key speakers were the farmers who shared their achievements with scientists. He said that the experiences shared by the progressive farmers of states like U.P., M.P. Jharkhand, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and our UT will motivate others farmers of Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that our farmers should also emulate their innovative practices for making agriculture and allied sectors a remunerative enterprise. This will enhance their socio-economic status. He reiterated that farmers should adopt improved and sustainable technological interventions to realize maximum profit. He stated that focus of University should be on 'extension beyond production'. He stressed on area specific research, value addition and marketing of agriproduce. He also emphasised on formation of more Farmer Producers Organizations in J&K for the empowerment of farmers.
During the conference, majority of the farmers were of the opinion that risk taking ability is a key factor behind their success where they adopted innovative/lateral ideas instead of routine agricultural practices.. The two days conference comprised of four technical sessions and during each session innovative farmers deliberated about his/her achievements. During the conference, progressive farmers also displayed their innovative products. All the statutory officers of the University, scientists and students attended the function. Proceedings of the valedictory function were coordinated by Dr. Pawan Sharma and vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Rakesh Sharma.
