Kashmir centric parties at precipice | | | It appears that Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone is all set to pay a heavy price for becoming a part of the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration-an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties-that was formed soon after Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was released last year. The PAGD, which comprised National Conference, PDP, PC and other small parties, as on date stands crumbled as the PC has pulled out from the conglomerate while the NC and PDP leaders are not at talking terms with each other. The Kashmir centric parties that had contested the recently held District Development Council (DDC) elections under a common PAGD platform stand at crossroads today. Peoples Conference seems to have been the worst sufferer. The PC chairman had to feel the heat due to National Conference backstabbing the party by fielding proxy candidates in the areas that were the strong holds of the party led by Sajad Lone. The separatist turned politician, Lone, who was also a cabinet minister in the erstwhile PDP-BJP regime, averted the possible split in his party last month by pulling out from the PAGD but he is still trying to absorb the aftershocks of joining hands with PDP and NC. There are reports that PC is heading towards a split as a new party is likely to come to fore in north Kashmir. It looks like that some PC leaders may join the new formation. If it happens it will be a big setback for Sajad Lone as he has been trying to bring his party at par with other Kashmir centric parties. But it appears that seeds of discord within the Peoples Conference have already been sown and Sajad may find it difficult to keep his flock intact. Nothing seems to be working out for Kashmir centric parties. PDP has almost lost it as Mehbooba has been left alone. Sajad is likely to face a similar situation if he fails to mend the fences with his party leaders. If the Kashmir centric leaders have to survive in the political arena they will have to mend their ways. They cannot keep on beating round the bush and raking up the issues that have already been buried. They have to acknowledge that time has changed and so has the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. |
