Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Apr 7: Independent councilor Touseef Raina was today elected as new chairman of the Municipal Council (MC) Baramulla by defeating his opponent by a margin of four votes. It is learnt that Touseef secured 11 votes while his opponent Mudasir Tantray polled seven votes only.
Out of 18 councilors, 11 voted in favor of Raina, electing him as new chairman of MC Baramulla. Sources said that from last many years, the councilors are focusing on politics instead of work due to which there has been no development of the town.
Various projects have been languishing since years; the dumping sites have not been properly identified, door to door collection of garbage from households is pending, the street lights are not fully functional in the town, said sources.
Sources said that, everybody wants to grab the power, somebody wants to become the chairman or president or someone wants to become the mayor of the town, whereas in real terms no one is working according to the needs of town, and with the result people are disappointed with all the councilors of MC Baramulla.
"Most of the projects are still incomplete, like there is no renovation of lanes and drains in all wards especially in Old town, Khanpora and Khawaja Bagh, and other places for which people are very disappointed," sources informed early times.
We want development of the town, let some dedicated and honest councilor come forward and take reigns of MC Baramulla, so that no politics or gimmickry is seen for some time now, said Bashir Ahmad of Baramulla town,
It is pertinent to mention here that on January 9 President Municipal Committee (MC) Baramulla was removed as eleven ward members had moved a no confidence motion against him.
Interestingly, last time the ward members had formally moved an application to CEO MC Baramulla for informing him that let the president MC Baramulla to prove his majority as his tenure had already come to an end in the last month.
Soon after this process, the former President Omar Azhar Kakroo was removed from the president ship with an immediate effect. On January 19, the High Court had stayed an order of Executive Officer Municipal Council Baramulla in which he had removed Omar as President of MC Baramulla.
Though the final decision was not received from High Court regarding no confidence motion which was submitted earlier and later withdrawn and the next date of hearing was set on 17th March 2021.
On March 29 Azhar Kakroo lost confidence vote in MC Baramulla of which Additional Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla Mohammad Ahsan Mir had told the newsmen on the sidelines of floor test that, they were supposed to conduct floor test, and out of 19 councilors 16 were present, while three remained absent.
Floor test was conducted according to rules, 10 votes were in favour of no confidence motion while six were against no confidence motion and therefore Azhar Kakroo is no more a president of MC Baramulla, the official had mentioned.
