Radio still significant in modern era
4/8/2021 12:36:11 AM
IRFAN HUSSAIN

There are some inventions that can never be replaced even if the modern technology touches the new heights. Similarly, Radio is one among many inventions that cannot be altered in this modern era. Although the innovations have provided more ways to the people to get information, but Radio is still a source of information for many, hence plays a pivotal role in the modern era. In places like Kashmir or even the place across the line of control, radio is a prime source of information and is listened to by large population. There was a time when Radio was the only source information and thus simultaneously made its position among the people in their day-to-day life.
Radio has the ability to reach across borders and can become a valuable source of information where reliable news is scarce. There was a time when the radio proved its worth during the period of emergency like world war.
The Radio was the only source of information for the people across the globe during the world war and people used to get information about the status of the countries who were engaged in the war.
According to the report prepared by Christine Concho in December 2004, the Radio propaganda played an important role before and throughout World War II. It helped accelerate the development of the war and hastened actually fighting. It also played a crucial role in individual countries in increasing production and helping the war effort. Without propaganda, it is doubtless that the war would have taken a different course.
Thus, it is evident that the Radio being a sole informative device during the world wars have made its significance and played a role as well.
It is a well-known fact that any invention of the human is not sustaining for a long, but the Radio has been there with the people from last more than 80 years and survived and prospered by being the easiest of media to use. Listening to the Radio is becoming easier with each passing day. The people can tune to listen to the Radio through their mobile phone devices and also in their vehicles.
The Radio is still an important tool in remote areas where the modern technology has not reached yet. The people in the remote areas across the country have been relying on Radio sets for getting the information about the world.
Radio has always been playing an important role as a primary source of information for the people of Jammu and Kashmir since decades. The famous Radio programmes like ‘Zooni Dabb’, Wadi ki Aawaz, Sheharbeen, Hello Farmayish have for years developed instant connect with the listeners and Radio a medium of air has acted as a major source of entertainment as well as infotainment for the people hailing from treacherous terrains and in accessible hamlets of this Himalayan region. The importance of Radio for the people of J&K could be gauged from the fact that inspite of latest technologies the media world like OTT platforms, the radio listenership has got plummeted.
On the contrary, it is gaining prominence among the younger generation with youth-centric programmes being broadcast on ‘Yuvavani’ and 103.5 FM are widely gaining acceptance among the younger generation. These programmes are generating ideas among the youth for their future. Yuvavani, which was started over four decades ago in 1973 was a great youth outreach medium.
Recently, a programme “Taya Ki Baithak”, which is being aired on Fridays from AIR, Srinagar at 8.30 PM is slowly developing into a strong analytical programme on situation in this region. It also Carrie’s the promise of putting out programs on education, skill development, employment, music and arts. This will thus, help the youngsters in finding solutions in educational fields, seeking employment and other things. ‘Taya ki Baithak’ is sure to become a popular programme and play a key role in making masses aware about the significance of peace and normalcy and how people have power to foil the nefarious designs to cause stir in the society from across the border. This is likely to be widely listened to, particularly in the frontier areas of Jammu and Kashmir and play a significant role for democratizing the ideas of peace and reconciliation instead of hatred and confrontation. It will help make people aware about the conditions and the situations from across the borders. From the three episodes aired so far, it is evident that it is unique, well structured and quite informative about the happenings of the other side of the Line of Control (LoC). It is poised to make people from across the borders look into the political and security situations objectively also and hence help in fighting the nefarious designs.
