Early Times Report

Anantnag, July 30: To ensure complete ban on illegal extraction, a team headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Anantnag on Friday raided various extraction spots and seized fifteen (15) vehicles including two 2 JCBs machines.
THE seized 15 vehicles including 2 JCBs from the extraction spots were handed over and detained in concerned police stations, officials said.
ADC, Ghulam Hassan Sheikh directed the District Mineral Officer and other officers to register cases under relevant provisions of law against the persons involved in illegal mining besides imposing heavy fines on them.
ADC told media that regular raids are being conducted by the District administration to curb the illegal extraction of sand and other river bed material.
He appealed to people involved in the extraction to desist from illegal activities as unplanned extraction wreaks havoc with the environment besides choking irrigation sources for the poor farmers.
Sheikh said illegal mechanical extraction won't be tolerated and warned stricter action will be taken against the violators of the law in the days ahead.
On black-marketing and making minor minerals available for locals as well as for those executing government works in the district, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Anantnag said that out of twenty (20) minor blocks, the e-auction of two minor mineral blocks will be completed in coming weeks.
“The process of allotting two minor mineral blocks is in the final stage. The extraction will be allowed systematically strictly as for the Minor Mineral plan which is a comprehensive plan,” he said, adding minor minerals will be made available to people at notified rates.
District Mineral Officer Anantnag admitted that the people were facing hardships due to ‘hard and fast conditions’ put by the government.
“For Government works we are issuing short term permission for execution of minor minerals,” he said, adding the execution of minor minerals was going on illegally in river Jhelum and other streams.
