Asha workers stage protest

Jammu, Sept 4: Asha Workers Union Jammu today organized a day long protest demonstration before the office of Mission Director, NHM Nagrota in support of their genuine and long pending demands. A large number of ASHA workers were participated in the demonstration and chanted slogans in support of their demands.
While addressing the Asha Workers Om Parkash General Secretary State Committee of CITU said that it is the fact that much of credit for the success of the fight against the first and second wave of the Covid goes to the selfless work of the fourteen thousands ASHA workers working in our Public Health System of Jammu & Kashmir. Further, he said a number of ASHA have so far been martyred in this fight saving thousands of lives but it is shameful for the nation that in spite of selfless dedicated work all these years and the extraordinary services provided by the ASHA workers during the pandemic, risking their own life and the lives of their family, the Government of India is not ready to recognize their work and regularize them as permanent employees, pay minimum wages and social security and pension as per the recommendations of the 45th and 46th Indian Labour Conferences. He urged upon the ASHA to continue their struggle for getting their demands. In her address Anu Rajput, Secretary of ASHA Workers Union - Jammu. said that ASHA Workers working in almost all other states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh etc are getting wages/remuneration of more than 10 thousands per month but ASHAs who have been working in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir are getting meager remuneration of rupees two thousands only, while we the ASHA workers are put on almost 24 hours’ duty, without leave; we are asked to conduct surveys, reporting the cases, getting medical help to the infected, monitoring the patients, follow up with the recovered ones and so on, it is in addition to our vaccination duties for almost 8-9 hours a day. She said that. ASHA workers are the crucial and immediate link between the health system and the people who living in far flung areas and they are the most vulnerable section of the health workers. She strongly demanded that ASHA should be given Rs.21000/- minimum wages and social security benefits like pension, EPF, ESI and free medical treatment etc. She also called upon all ASHAs of Jammu & Kashmir to continue their struggle till their demands are met. Rita Devi leader of ASHA Workers Union Jammu said that we have already submitted the memorandum comprising the demands such as increase in remuneration/wage from Rs.2000/- to Rs.21000/- per month, additional increase in wage of Rs.1000/- every year , special allowance Rs.300/- per day for motivation and mobilization compaign for Covid vaccination, allowance of Rs.500/- per day for performing their duties in Covid Management, Rs. 50 lakh to the dependents of those ASHAs who had died due to CoVid Pandemic, covered under 50 lakh insurance scheme as announced by government of India for front line workers, No ASHA should be retired until and unless pension and other social security schemes are implemented for them, revision of all existing incentives to three times etc. to hon’ble Lt. Governor, Mission Director and to the administration. She demanded and urged upon the government to accept all genuine demands without any further delay.
