Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sep 4: Two Assistant Regional Transport Officers of the transport department were attached today by the general administration department in the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.
The General Administration Department of Government of Jammu and Kashmir issued an order of attachment of officers vide no: 824-JK (GAD) of 2021, dated 04.09.2021.
The order reads that, in the interest of administration, the following officers of Transport Department are hereby attached in the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, with immediate effect, till further orders.
According to an order, the two Assistant Regional Transport Officers, Anantnag, Peerzada Shabbir Ahmad, and In-charge Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Kupwara, Mukhtar Ahmad Sofi were attached to the Divisional Commissioners Office Srinagar.
However sources privy to this development said that, in the past few years, many fake licenses were issued to various known persons in district Kupwara of north Kashmir.
The In-charge Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Kupwara has purchased huge property on different names for which the investigating agencies are working, said sources on anonymity conditions.
Sources also alleged and said that there is movable and immovable property worth lakhs of the concerned transport officer that has not been yet made public by the investigating agency.
It is pertinent to mention here that on Sep 1, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) booked the Kupwara assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) and three others for graft and recovered ₹15 lakh from their possession.
The accused were identified as Kupwara ARTO Mukhtar Ahmad Sofi, motor vehicle inspector Khursheed Ahmad Kanna, motor vehicle inspector Abdul Hamid Bhat and private agent Bilal Ahmad Sheikh of Vilgam Kupwara.
ACB had carried out a surprise check that was conducted at the driving test site in Nagri Kupwara following allegations that all affairs of the ARTO office, such as issuance of learner’s license, driving licence, fitness certificates, etc, are carried out through corrupt means.
“During the checking the accused Bilal Ahmad Sheikh was found actively involved in conducting driving tests along with the officials of ARTO, Kupwara.
On searching his personal car, 138 original driving licences, besides other incriminating material were recovered. During initial investigation, it had come to the fore that there is a deep nexus between some officers of the transport department and private agents (brokers) who are involved in fleecing the general public. While Rs 15 lakh were recovered from the residential premises of (ARTO, Kupwara) and Bilal Ahmad Sheikh.
