New General Bus Stand Jammu a flop show: Shopkeepers
Threaten to commit suicide, say Govt has pushed them at verge of starvation
10/7/2021 12:03:35 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 6: Shopkeepers in a new complex at General Bus stand on Monday threatened to commit suicide as they alleged that government has left them to fend on their own.
Shopkeepers while talking to Early Times said, “The new complex was inaugurated in February this year and since then we have been struggling to survive. Since the day the new complex has been inaugurated no electricity connection has been provided to any shop.”
They said, “Our old shops were located at prime location but we have been allotted new shops in the backyard. No one reaches our shops. We had given running shops. But in return we have been given a complex where no one comes.”
Shopkeepers said, “We have been misled as our businesses have been ruined. There were 53 shops and all of us had employed two to three persons in our shops. More than 200 people have been rendered jobless. We are finding it hard to manage two square meals a day. Our compensation has been stopped. We are on the verge of starvation.”
They said, “There are no sign boards to indicate the terminals of the buses. There is no mention about which bus will leave from where. The New ISBT has proved to be mere eyewash. Ticket counters have been set up as a mere formality as the passengers board the buses outside. If the same situation continues we will be forced to stage protests and set up stalls on footpaths. The administration seems to be in a deep slumber and it appears that we are being subjected to some sort of vendetta.
The shopkeepers said, “Rs 214 crore spent on constructing this bus stand have gone waste. The government has no idea about how to turn this flop show into a productive venture. We are not earning a single penny. We have no idea about how to pay the school fee of our children and how to meet the other expenses.”
They said, “Despite the market remaining closed we are being asked to pay the rent for the shops. How can we manage to pay rent when our shops are closed.”
