Jammu’s economy faces onslaught
10/8/2021 12:16:27 AM
Decision of the Jammu and Kashmir Government to scrap 149-year old Darbar Move practice has hit the people of Jammu hard. The repercussions of the decision will be visible soon as this year many people, who used to move along with Darbar in October every year from Kashmir won’t arrive this year.
The members of the business community are already up in arms against the decision to revoke the practice.
The house owners who used to give their dwellings on rent during winter too are also disappointed as rent was a part of their income.
From renting accommodations to staying in hotels and doing shopping, the Darbar was a good business in Jammu. Infact some of the malls and marketplaces used to witness brisk business during winters. From hoteliers to landlords to shopkeepers to dhabas and restaurants almost every sector of business used to get benefitted by Darbar. The winter definitely used to be a business season for Jammu. After the end of the tradition people of Jammu fear that there will be a slump in the economy and it will have a direct impact on everyone.
People of Jammu are of the opinion that the Jammu and Kashmir administration has taken many arbitrary decisions during the past two years and scrapping of the 149-year old Darbar Move practice has been one such decision. Despite people of Jammu opposing many decisions, the helmsmen haven’t responded.
It seems bureaucrats who are running the system believe that they can take no wrong decision and whatever they will do should be acceptable to people.
The decision to revoke Darbar Move practice was taken without taking the people of Jammu on board.
The decision was announced through social media and no one was even asked whether it was a right or wrong call.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to scrap J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories—people of Jammu were hoping that things would change but it hasn’t happened.
Businessmen, employees, students and doctors all are on streets staging protests to seek redressal of their grievances.
The helmsmen need to pay attention towards the issues which a common man is facing. The benefits of the abrogation of Article 370 are not still visible on the ground. The Centre needs to take a note of how a few people are ruining all the hard work and effort.
