Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 7: Residents of R S Pura are unhappy over the decision of the administration to displace them to construct a heritage rail link between Jammu and Sialkote.
Chaudary Satpal while talking to Early Times said, “We had come from Pakistan in 1947 and the government had asked us to build our dwellings on the land here. Now, we have heard that the government is planning to build a heritage Railway Station here.”
A woman said, “We have been staying here for the past seven decades. We have built these small rooms after working as labourers. If the government dislocates us we will be left with nowhere to go. It’s unfortunate that instead of helping us the government is planning to throw us out.”
The residents said, “If the government goes ahead with its plan to build a heritage railway station it will spell doom for us. We have no strength to rebuild new houses. If the administration remains adamant then it should rehabilitate us first.”
It’s in place to mention here that a proposal has been made to construct a railway heritage station at R S Pura and revive rail link between Jammu and Sialkot as the authorities are claiming that it would boost the tourism in the area and it would improve relations with Pakistan. “As it’s our relations with Pakistan are not that good, why do the officials want to displace thousands of people to appease a hostile neighbor?” the residents asked.
