KVK Reasi celebrates Mahila Kisan Diwas

REASI, Oct 15: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas here today at Gunn village of Pouni block in Reasi district of J&K which was enthusiastically attended by a large number of farm women of the area. The programme was organized under the guidance of Director Extension of SKUAST-J, Prof SK Gupta
The programme was initiated by Dr Banarsi Lal, Scientist and Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the participants.
While addressing the participants, he briefed about the significance of the event and highlighted the multi-dimensional role of farm women in agriculture and allied sectors. He spoke in length on women empowerment and women nutrition.
He said that KVK, Reasi is endeavoring for rural women empowerment as it is the need of the hour. He informed that about 80 per cent of field operations are performed by the women farmers and they play the pivotal role to raise the economy of the nation by increasing the crops production and productivity.
He discussed on the importance of nutri-gardens and educated them on nursery raising techniques in vegetables. He also spoke on gender mainstreaming and highlighted the Beti Bachao, Beti Padao campaign and said that there is dire need to control the declining sex ratio in the society.
He emphasized on the female literacy and asked participants to provide quality education to their girl children. He highlighted number of services supportive for women’s socio-economic empowerment such as Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs), Pardhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP). Quality seeds of marigold and zinnia flowers were also provided to the women farmers during the programme. Women farmers interacted with the KVK scientist and asked various technical quarries which were answered satisfactorily by the scientist during the interactive session.
During the programme, awardee woman farmer, Anita Devi was also present who shared her experiences with the other participants. The programme was concluded by Dr Banarsi Lal with formal vote of thanks.
