KVK Reasi organizes field day on Sesamum crop

JAMMU, Oct 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reasi under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized a field day on sesamum crop at the Malad village of Pouni block in Reasi district of J&K which was enthusiastically attended by a number of farmers and farm women of the area.
The programme was organized under the guidance of Vice Chancellor, Prof J P Sharma and Director Extension, Prof.S K Gupta of SKUAST-Jammu. The programme was initiated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the participants. He started the programme with the brief introduction of Kharif oilseed crops and said that sesamum is one of the leading oilseeds crops in the region.
He stressed on the scientific farming of sesamum and urged farmers to adopt the latest technologies of sesamum recommended by the SKUAST-J. He emphasized on the quality seed of sesamum crop and added that there is an immense potential of sesamum production in the area. He educated the farmers on scientific cultivation of sesamum and added that scientific cultivation of sesame can help them to enhance their crops production.
Dr. Banarsi suggested the farmers that they should utilize the certified seed of improved varieties of sesamum. He emphasized on timely weeding/hoeing in sesamum crop for its good yield. He highlighted the importance of soil testing and spoke in detail on the Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and Integrated Disease Management (IDM) in sesamum crop.
He educated on the scientific cultivation of Rabi season oilseed crops. KVK has laid frontline demonstrations of improved variety (RT-351) of sesamum in different locations of the district and the farmers showed keen interested in the technologies demonstrated by the KVK. Bimla Devi, an awardee farm woman of the area was also present during the programme.
