‘Limited permission to Mahajans, Khatris, Sikhs to sell or buy agri land unfair decision’

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 22: Expressing displeasure over the recent decision of the Government over limited permission of sale and purchase of agriculture land to the Mahajan, Khatri and Sikh community, the President of Jammu Central Mahajan Sabha, Ramesh Chander Gupta termed it an incomplete decision and injustice to these communities.
While talking to Early Times RC Gupta said that giving permission to these communities to purchase or sell agricultural land with some conditions is injustice with these communities. “Although this is an era of free trade across the country and everything is equal for each citizen as per the Constitution of India but putting restrictions and conditions on these communities is injustice with them,” he said.
“This decision of the Government cannot be termed as fair. When all communities are progressing well and doing business then what is fun only targeting these communities. The government trying to take credit for the decision but this move cannot be termed as fair because of the imposition of conditions again putting us in difficulty,” he said.
“With these decisions, the government is trying to oppress our community and has made Mahajans as a controversial community,” Gupta said.
He alleged that depriving them of purchasing agricultural land is sheer violation of the right to equality.
“If such step motherly treatment continues then it would be better that our community should be given status of backward and allow us reservation,” he said further adding the government has again given all authorities to the bureaucrats in this case, who can either permit or reject the case,” he said..
Pertinently, the Administrative Council (AC), which met under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, authorized the District Collectors to grant permission to an agriculturist to alienate land to a non-agriculturist subject to certain conditions and procedure for extending primary activities on larger commercial lines and reap benefits under economy of scale.
