JKHCBAJ delegation meets LG; put forth grievances of lawyers' fraternity | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 16: The office-bearers of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu (JKHCBAJ) on Tuesday called on the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and acquainted him about the problems being faced by the lawyers particularly on account of lack of infrastructure after the Constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir state was changed to Union Territory and due to COVID-19 pandemic induced prolonged lockdown. Describing the meeting as cordial, the JKHCBAJ president, Mohinder Bhardwaj said that the Lt Governor gave a patient hearing and assured that the demands proposed by the JKHCBAJ through a memorandum submitted to him will be sympathetically considered. Mohinder Bhardwaj, who led the JKHCBAJ office-bearers namely Mohinder Pal Singh Palli (Vice President), Surjeet Andotra (General Secretary), Aditya Sharma (Joint Secretary) and Amandeep Singh (Treasurer) briefed the Lt Governor about the issues on which the lawyers' body has been agitating for quite some time now. He also made some suggestions regarding developing additional infrastructure in the Janipur Court Complex itself to accommodate various tribunals and offices related to the registration work. Stating that the existing infrastructure was too deficient both in terms of building accommodation and lack of benches of various tribunals, he suggested that a multi-storied building should be constructed within the complex where a lot of land is available so that all such offices related to judicial work are housed in the same premises. This would help the lawyers who are otherwise facing a lot of difficulties as some of the tribunals are either located in other areas of the city or even outside the UT and as far as Chandigarh. The JKCHBAJ delegation also apprised the Lt Governor that the lawyers' community particularly the young lawyers have been fighting for their survival in view of the COVID-19 pandemic which has been further compounded by the infrastructural issues. As a result many of the lawyers have either quit or are on the verge of quitting the profession. Bhardwaj sought the Lt Governor's personal intervention and appealed to him to take immediate steps to safeguard the interests of the lawyers which also has a direct bearing on the public interest as many of the cases remain unattended due to scattered nature of the tribunal, offices of Sub-Registrars and other allied institutions. He also appealed to the Lt Governor to use his good office for creation of additional benches of tribunals such as CAT, DRT, Consumer Court and Others. Furthermore, the Lt Governor was requested to engage maximum number of young Advocates as Standing Counsels, Assisting Counsels in different Govt Offices and Autonomous Bodies or in alternate some stipend may kindly be fixed for the young advocates. |
