Omicron Threat
11/28/2021 10:20:51 PM

New variant of COVID-19, Omicron, has triggered a fear that the virus may raise its ugly head again and things can go back to square one. Some experts are of the opinion that this new variant may escape the immunity provided by the vaccine and even the persons who were infected earlier may get re-infected again. According to the media reports the Omicron has been reported to have at least 32 mutations and 2000 cases have been confirmed, spread over a number of countries.
The experts are trying to study the behavior of the new virus and are not sure about the severity of the infection it can cause. They are stating that the new variant may have very well reached India as two South African nationals had been quarantined in Bengaluru as they had tested positive. It would take a while to understand how the new variant is affecting the world but early reports indicate that there needs to be an increased vigil.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the officials to review the plans to ease international travel restrictions in light of the emerging new evidence. The surge in COVID-19 cases across the world is not good news. The countries need to take precautions and ensure that denizens follow the basic rules i.e. wear masks, maintain social distance and hand hygiene. Experts have advised the countries to coordinate with each other and perform field investigations and laboratory assessments to improve understanding of the potential impacts of the VOC on COVID-19 epidemiology, severity, effectiveness of public health and social measures, diagnostic methods, immune responses, antibody neutralisation, or other relevant characteristics.
The alarm has been sounded and J&K administration needs to take a note of it. Our past experiences have been bitter. When the second wave of COVID-19 hit J&K hospitals were overcrowded and people had nowhere to go. One thing is for sure that the COVID-19 is a contagious virus and spreads at a rapid pace. Cases can increase within no time.
It’s unfortunate that people have abandoned using masks and big gatherings have once again become a norm. It’s high time to understand that situation can take an ugly turn at any point of time. And we cannot take the resurgence of the virus lightly. Let’s hope that the new variant is controlled before it becomes deadly. Till then people need to follow the basic rules to keep the pestilence at bay.
