Kashmir, Ladakh; gripped in freezing cold; Srinagar, Pahalgam coldest places

Srinagar, Dec 1: Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region are in a grip of freezing cold conditions as Sringar and pahalgam experience coldest night of the season with dry weather continue prevailing in the two Union Territories. There is no let up in cold wave conditions had further intensified in Kashmir valley with a dip in night temperature as Srinagar recorded the seasons coldest night on minus 2.5 degree Celsius against the minus 1.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday. Dry weather couples with fog covered at most of the places in the including the famous Dal Lake and Boulevard Road making life miserable for the residents.
The MeT office said the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir was the coldest places in Kashmir valley, where the minimum temperature further dipped to minus 5.2 degree Celius against the minus 3.3 degree Celsius recorded a day ago showing a plung in the temperature of two degrees. Intense cold breeze conditions continue to prevail there with most of the small water bodies frozen due to the freezng temperature.
Meanwhile, Ladakh Union Territory was also in grip of intense cold and temperature at Air Force station of Drass was recorded at minus 108 degree celsius against the minus 11.4 degree Celsius a day ago, while in Leh the temperature further dipped to minus 11.9 degree celsius against the minus 9.7 degree and Kargil settled at minus 7.4 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.
The famous Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, although showing an improvement in the night temperature, was recorded at minus 1.6 degree Celsius against the minus 1.7 degree Celsius a day ago. However, freezing cold conditions were covered with a thick fog, making the movement of tourists staying there difficult.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was recorded at minus 3.3 degree Celsius against the minus 1.4 degrees showing a further dip of two degree while Kokernag recorded at minus 1.8 degree Celsius against the minus 0.9 degrees also dip of a degree in the night temperature against the previous day.
In frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature further plunged to minus 3.5 degree Celsius against the minus 2.4 degree Celsius the previous day, the MeT office said.
