KVK Leh celebrates World Soil Day

LEH, Dec 5: With the message, ‘To the Soil, Let us be Loyal’, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Leh, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir celebrated World Soil Day at its Leh Office.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Prof (Dr) JP Sharma, HVC of both SKUASTs of UT of Jammu and Kashmir and Prof Dr DM Makhdoomi, Director Extension, SKUAST-K in a hybrid mode i.e. both offline as well as online. Dr FD Sheikh, Sr. Scientist and Head at KVK-Leh told that due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the UT of Ladakh, the administration of UT Ladakh has suspended the public dealings in all offices and as such the programme had to be conducted in a hybrid mode. KVK-Leh headed by Dr Sheikh had made elaborative arrangements for the conducting the programme online with expert speakers. The programme started with an introduction about the day by Dr. Parveen Kumar SMS (Ag. Extension) at KVK Leh. Dr Kumar introduced the participants with the history and importance of the day. Dr Kartikey Sootrakar from Rani Lakshmi Bhai Central Agricultural University Jhansi and Jitendra Miglani, an innovative organic farmer from Haryana were the expert speakers on this occasion. Dr. Kartikey in his presentation deliberated upon the soil salinization, the theme for this year’s event. Miglani shared his experiences of organic farming and also elaborated upon various natural farming practices like Jeevamrita, Beejamrita and other natural farming practices. Dr Sheikh in his remarks called upon all to come together to fight all the environmental degradation be it related to soil, to air, to water or to other natural resources.
The programme was attended by different subject matter specialists and technical staff of KVK-Leh, many farmers, youths and students of the region. On this occasion drawing, essay and slogan writing competition was also organized in which students from different schools of Leh depicted their creativity with drawings and slogans related to various themes under soil conservation.
