Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Jan 10: Heavy snowfall has thrown life out of gear in most areas of this district along with the Uri and Gurez areas, while the border security forces have airlifted three patients for medical attention from the snow-bound Tangdhar sector.
Sources said that Chowkibal area of Kupwara received 2 and half feet of snow whereas Sadna top and other adjacent areas got three feet of snow, similarly 4-5 feet of snow was recorded in Tangdar and Karnah areas respectively.
“In the past few days, the majority of the inner link roads in remote areas are closed, however today afternoon district administration has started snow clearance operations on some roads in the district”, said sources from Chowkibal. They said that three to four feet of snow has accumulated on roads leading to Keran, Karnah, Machil and Tangdhar sectors of this border district.
“The district administration has also issued avalanche warnings and they have advised the general public not to venture in avalanche prone areas”, sources said. A senior police official said that the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has issued advisory in avalanche prone areas like Tangdhar, Machil, Chowkibal, and Karnah, Gurez Bandipora, Uri and in other higher reaches of the valley.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has airlifted three patients for medical attention from the snow-bound Tangdhar sector, the official informed. Sources while quoting an official of PDD said that, many trees have been uprooted, blocking roads and getting entangled in transmission lines at few places, adding we are trying to fix the lines and hopefully electricity will be restored in all the areas of this border district by today evening.
Sources informed that the DC also took stock of ongoing snow clearance in Kupwara town, Trehgam, Hirri Qadirabad and other major areas and directed the officers to keep their men and machinery available in the ground so that people do not face any inconvenience.
Meanwhile locals from Uri informed that heavy snowfall has paralyzed normal life in Sub Division Uri and more than half dozen villages of Sub Division Uri are still cut off from the tehsil headquarters. The roads connecting half dozen villages to tehsil headquarters remained closed due to the accumulation of snow.
Locals said that more than half dozen villages including Churanda, Batgrah, Hathlanga, Dana-Mohthal, Zamoorpatan, Banali, Salasan, Chotali and Barnate still remain cut off from tehsil headquarters. An official of PDD has said that 95 percent of the power supply in Sub Division Uri has been restored.
Sources from Bandipora district also informed that, the link roads in the town and other adjoining areas have not been cleared yet, adding the district administration have almost restarted snow clearance on war footing basis, and within two days all roads will be cleared, as weather conditions are now improving.
