Upper reaches of Kashmir gets light snowfall

SRINAGAR, Jan 17: Upper reaches of Kashmir valley including the ski resort of Gulmarg received light snowfall while the plains were lashed by mild rains unleashing cold conditions disrupting normal life on Monday.
Officials said light snowfall was experienced in north Kashmir areas including in the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, Sopore, Baramulla, Lolab and Kupwara.
Upper reaches of Pir panjal range including Peer ki Gali, Baflaiz on Mughal road and Kongwatan, Kokernag in south Kashmir also received a dose of fresh light snowfall.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas received mild rains disrupting normal life.
A Meteorological department office weather advisory predicts a spell of light rain/snow in plains and light to moderate snow over the higher reaches at scattered places during January 17-18. There is no forecast of major snow till the end of January.
Meanwhile, night temperature improved in the Kashmir valley as Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, recorded a low of 1 degree Celsius against minus 1.2 degrees the previous night. Gulmarg in north Kashmir was cold at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius against minus 7 degrees a day ago, which was 3.1 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir shivered at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius. The temperature at Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, was minus 1 degrees.
Kupwara was hit by 0.5 degrees Celsius but an improvement against the minus 2.1 degrees the previous night.
Leh in Ladakh recorded minus 13.1 degrees Celsius and Drass recorded a low of minus 16.2 degrees Celsius.
