A poster-making competition on theme social and economic issues in India held at Government GLDM Degree College Hiranagar

HIRANAGAR, May 28: The Department of Economics and Department of Sociology Government GLDM Degree College Hiranagar organised a poster-making competition on the theme "Social and Economic Issues in India".The subthemes of the competition were Poverty, Child Labour, Unemployment, Health related issues, Inequality of caste and gender and educational backwardness. The poster making competition begun at 11.00 am in the morning. Students belonging to different semesters expressed their views on the themes through different posters.
The social and economic issues in India are rampant. As per business today reports the top one percent of Indians own 33% of the country's wealth compared to 31.7 per cent previously. The top 10 per cent own 64.6 percent of the country's wealth while the share of the bottom 50 percent now stands at 5.9 per cent, down from 6 percent earlier. Despite different policies and programmes the disparity still exists. Inequality of caste and gender, is again rampant in India. Through the posters students displayed such issues of national importance. Child labour also came out as a dominant theme in the posters by the students besides other sub-themes mentioned above. The programme therefore holds an important position to spread awareness on the one hand and also to seek opinion of the students on the other hand.
The students through their posters articulated on the need to solve these issues so that world can become a better place to live. The event was adjudged byDr. Rajesh Sharma (Head, Department of Mathematics) Prof. Parveen Pathak (Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Sciences) and Dr. Bharat Bhushan (Head, Department of Music). After the threadbare discussion amongst the judges the winners for the competition were selected. Shruti was selected for first prize, Shivika bagged the second position and the third position was shared by Shakti and Neha.
Dr. Pragaya Khanna, Principal of the college witnessed the event and praised all the participants and organisers for their efforts in conducting such events. She further encouraged and inspired the participants and motivated them to participate in all the activities of the college. The momentos were also distributed among the winners of the competition. The organisers of the programme comprised of Dr. Chinky Sangral, Head Department of Economics, Dr. Arun Kumar, Head Department of Sociology, Mrs. Ritu Bhushan, the Librarian and Dr. Ravinder Kumar, Lecturer Department of Sociology.The whole event was organised in consultation and support of the principal of the college Dr. Pragya Khanna.
