VC SKUAST Jammu Inaugurated Aquaculture/Wet Lab on the eve of National Fish Farmers Day

Jammu, July 9: The Government of India in 2001 declared 10th July as “National Fish Farmers Day” in memory of Prof. Hiralal Chaudhuri for his momentous breakthrough that dramatically transformed the fish culture sector in India. To commemorate this day, the Fisheries Unit of SKUAST Jammu organized an event under DST project in collaboration with IDP (NAHEP) SKUAST-J at main campus, Chatha. Prof. J.P. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Jammu and Chief Guest on the occasion inaugurated ‘Aquaculture/Wet Lab’ and ‘Fish Processing and Value Addition Lab’ established under DST funded research project entitled ‘Socio-economic Empowerment and Capacity Building of Rural SC/ST Communities through Technological Interventions in Fish Farming’. Prof. J.P. Sharma in his address appreciated the efforts made by Dr. Akhil Gupta, Professor, Fisheries and Principal Investigator of the Project for the establishment of laboratories and organizing the event for fish farmers of the region and students.
Prof. Sharma highlighted the vision of Govt. of India for strengthening of fisheries sector by allocation of Rs. 20,050 crores under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
He quoted many success stories at national level and wished that the fish farmers of the region will flourish and become success stories of J&K. A group of fish farmers/project beneficiaries from different locations of Jammu and Samba district and students of SKUAST Jammu attended the event.
Vice Chancellor also distributed fish seed, medicine and chemical for pond treatment to the project beneficiaries. Earlier, Dr. Akhil Gupta, PI-DST Project welcomed the Chief Guest and participants and briefed about the contribution of Prof. Hiralal Chaudhuri, the architect of ‘Blue revolution’ in India and the ‘Father of induced breeding’ technique who achieved the feat of induced breeding of a carp fish in India. He also highlighted various undergoing activities of the project work to the Chief Guest in presence of project beneficiaries and university dignitaries. Prof A K Mondal, Dean FoA; Prof B C Sharma, PI-IDP NAHEP Project, Dr Vikas Sharma, Co-PI IDP NAHEP Project, Dr Sahar Masud, Incharge Fisheries, Dr. Prem Kumar, Scientist KVK Jammu, Dr. Balbir Dhotra, Associate Professor OFRC, Dr. Sushmita Dadhich, Asstt. Professor Agri. Engineering were also present on the occasion. A lecture on ‘Start Up Opportunities in Aquaculture’ was also delivered by Dr. Prem Kumar. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Dr Prem Kumar, Co-PI DST Project and Scientist KVK Jammu.
