Amarnath Yatra Resumes
7/12/2022 10:49:14 PM

After the cloudburst tragedy near the Amarnath Cave shrine that left 16 devotees dead, the pilgrimage has resumed. The devotees have started moving towards the holy cave shrine in large numbers to pay obeisance.
The J&K Government has assured the pilgrims that they won’t face any problems and all the facilities will be provided to them. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has visited the yatra base camps to take stock of the facilities and reassure the pilgrims that they need not worry.
After the tragedy, the authorities have started treading on a cautious path and efforts are being made to ensure that even the slightest of weather warnings are not taken lightly.
There were reports that the absence of a Doppler radar at Banihal made a massive difference in proper forecast ahead of the Amarnath Yatra tragedy last week.
The Doppler radar atop Banihal is not yet functional, a crucial link that could have helped avert the tragedy.
The Doppler radar is an important tool that gives the India Meteorological Department (IMD) real time, more accurate assessment of clouds and rainfall in a given range of the radar, 100 km in case of the radar at Banihal.
Weather in Jammu and Kashmir has always been a challenge. The officials are aware about it and they have to ensure that all the parameters are checked before allowing the pilgrims to proceed.
Forecasting the monsoon is already a tricky thing and forecasting rain related events in the Himalayan region is a further tricky aspect. Post the 2014 Kashmir floods, there was a lot of hue and cry about the lack of observational network, with the Doppler radars occupying a major role in the discourse.
The government has done a commendable job by restoring Amarnath Yatra within two days. The pilgrims who were stranded in the base camps in Kashmir and Jammu are on way towards their destination, while new batches are arriving. The tragedy has not shaken the faith of devotees and they are keen to reach the holy cave shrine.
The Amarnath Yatra has commenced again. Now, it’s the duty of the various departments coordinating the yatra to make sure that weather predictions are cross checked to ensure that no more lives are lost.
