7/14/2022 10:57:23 PM
Early Times Report

REASI, July 14: Department of English of Government Degree College Pouni, in collaboration with IQAC today hosted the Book Review Competition-2022 in the presence of the College Principal Prof. Rajni Bhagat, and under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav.Prof. U S Liza, HOD English was the event Incharge, while Prof. Balbir Kumar, and Dr. Varsha Kapoor, the Convener and Co-convener of IQAC, executed the event. The event was a part of the series of literary events being organised by the College from time to time with the objective to provide students a platform to showcase their literary abilities and talent with a competitive spirit. The main purpose of the competition was to create an atmosphere where literary and critical abilities of the students are enhanced.
Prof. U S Liza after discussing with Prof. Balbir Kumar and Dr. Varsha kapoor selected a Romantic Era poem.
The text selected for the review was English Romantic poet William Wordsworth’s sonnet, “The World Is Too Much with Us.” The selection of the poem was well-thought. Though published in 1807, the poem has relevance in the present times as it laments the withering connection between humankind and nature, blaming industrial society for replacing that connection with material pursuits. A total number of 10 responses were submitted. Every participant analysed the poem from his/her own perspective by bringing out various themes and techniques with textual references. All the participants tried their level best to analyze the poem critically. All other members of IQAC, Dr. Tarseem Kumar, Prof. Jaspal Singh and Prof. Bindu Sharma evaluated the entries submitted. Out of all the entries, Vaishali Sharma’s entry stood out. She studies in semester second, GDC Pouni. Her review was very well put forward. She deconstructed the poem in different sections talking about the rhyme scheme, tone and central idea, and then concluding with her personal opinion. She maintained how modernity has eroded not just people’s connection to nature, but also people’s sense of individual identity. Principal ma’am, Prof. Rajni Bhagat applauded the Professors and students by appreciating the sincere efforts of the Committee members for creating an atmosphere where literature is to be read and promoted through artwork, theatre, article writing, and article/book review.
