Young lives cut short
9/23/2022 10:48:28 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has taken a serious note of the death of three female students of Jammu University in an unfortunate accident near Ramban on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Among the three deceased, two were national players, Tsetan Dolma, daughter of Tashi Andus, was a national-level ice hockey player while Rigzen Lamo was a promising national football player. The untimely deaths of three youngsters who could have made the country proud are unfortunate. The young lives were cut short.
Soon after the tragic accident Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta chaired a high level meeting to review the pace of the ongoing widening work on the highway.
The Chief Secretary directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to carry out the repair works on the shooting-stone-prone stretches of the road for 4 hours within a period of 5 days from coming Friday (3:00-7:00 am).
He directed the officials to halt the traffic during the night when traffic is very lean and minimal. He underscored the need to create minimum obstacles for traffic movement during these days.
The Ramban accident once again exposed the causal approach adopted by the executing agencies engaged in the widening project of the National Highway. The J&K government has taken a serious note of the lackadaisical attitude of the executing agencies and they are likely to face action for their way of working.
In the past also the government has pulled up the agencies involved in widening work on many occasions. But this time around these agencies are likely to face tough action so that they take their job seriously and realize that even small mistakes on their part can lead to the loss of precious lives.
To travel on the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has become risky as the widening is being carried out in a haphazard manner. The executing agencies need to streamline their working and ensure that chances of the accidents are minimized.
The widening work of the highway is almost complete and only a few stretches are left. The agencies involved in the process need to ensure that the work is carried out in such a way that accidents don’t occur and people commute safely.
