Mehbooba, Omar criticise Govt move on encroachments

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 18: Former Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah criticised the government for issuing directions to remove encroachments from state land, including Roshni and Kahcharai by January end.
Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti said any law of the country is for the welfare of the citizens but in Jammu and Kashmir after 2019 so many laws have been brought and they have been used like arms against the people to suppress them.
“All the laws and rules have been weaponized and being used against the people of J&K to disempower, humiliate and suppress them”, Mehbooba said while talking to media persons after her party workers took out a procession in Srinagar in protest against the government move to evict land.
Mehbooba said, the people who are living on the lands for years are very poor with having five to six marlas of having constructed their homes and now they are being asked to vacate the land is humiliating.
National Conference Vice-president Omar Abdullah said the Roshni scheme was never rejected by anyone and retrieving the land provided to people under this scheme will be tantamount to betraying the people.
He said under this scheme, Jammu farmers have been benefited the most and taking back the lands would be a betrayal to them, therefore the government should reconsider its decision.
However, he said as far as state land is concerned, illegal occupation of land anywhere, if found, should be retrieved, but it seems that such actions are aimed to harass the people as the government has failed to improve the situation on the ground.
He said such decisions are aimed at diverting attention from the main issues.
