GDC Vijaypur students celebrate World Wetland Day
2/1/2025 10:39:29 PM
Early Times Report
VIJAYPUR, Feb 1: In celebration of World Wetland Day, students of Government Degree College Vijaypur visited the Gharana Wetland under the guidance of Dr. Vandana Verma, Principal of the college. The visit aimed to raise awareness among students about the crucial role wetlands play in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance.
The visit was part of the practical coursework of the Department of Environmental Sciences and the Ecoclub, and it combined environmental education with traditional agricultural practices. During the visit, students engaged in bird watching, using high-power binoculars to observe various resident and migratory bird species at the wetland.
Prof. Poonam Kundan, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Convener of the Ecoclub, explained the importance of combining traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific practices. She emphasized how such field visits help students appreciate the role of indigenous practices in sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
Along with exploring the wetland ecosystem, students visited traditional farms in the area, witnessing age-old farming methods focused on sustainable agricultural techniques and the cultivation of indigenous crops. They also documented the indigenous farming knowledge, recognizing its relevance for contemporary agriculture, particularly in the face of climate change and environmental challenges.
Students interacted with local farmers and learned about the importance of crop diversity, organic farming, and the sustainable use of natural resources. They also discussed the management measures undertaken by the Department of Wildlife Protection to protect the wetland and raised awareness about its significance in the region.
The one-day tour was coordinated by Prof. Poonam Kundan and co-coordinated by Dr. Radhika Rasyal, Prof. Mazid Malik, and Prof. Shukoor Nazir. This initiative highlighted the importance of wetlands and deepened students' understanding of sustainable farming practices, bridging the gap between ancient agricultural wisdom and modern environmental conservation efforts.
