Early Times Report REASI, Mar 1: In a landmark move towards digital policing, District Police Reasi has registered it's first-ever electronic First Information Report (e-FiR) at P/S Katra, following a complaint lodged via WhatsApp, marking a significant step in enhancing accessibility to justice as per new criminal laws. The complainant reported that her husband had been physically abusing her and their children for the past three months. On February 24, 2025, she allegedly that her husband assaulted with a stick, fracturing her left arm and causing injuries to her head. Unable to visit the Police Station due to her condition, she lodged the complaint through WhatsApp. Acting swiftly, SH P/S Katra under the close supervision of SDP Katra and Addl. SP Katra registered e-FIR No. 55/2025 U/S 11(2)/85 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). This initiative underscores District Police Reasi commitment to leveraging technology for efficient, citizen-friendly policing and timely grievance redressal. Under Section 173 of the BNSS, electronic complaints-including those received via SMS, email, WhatsApp, Citizen Service Centers, and web portals -are now entered into Police records. However, as per legal provisions, the complainant must sign the electronically submitted complaint within three days. SSP Reasi Paramvir Singh-JKPS stated, "This milestone reflects the seamless integration of technology in law enforcement, paving the way for quicker and more accessible justice delivery in the District." To prevent misuse of the e-FIR system, adequate checks and balances have been put in place. Additionally, District Police Reasi is actively conducting awareness programs on the New Criminal Laws (NCL), encouraging citizens to report cognizable offenses and ensuring they are well-informed about their rights and legal procedures.
