Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 19: In a significant step towards promoting cutting-edge medical education and genetic healthcare, AIIMS Jammu successfully organized a high-impact Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled "Genetics in Obstetrics & Pediatrics: Advances in Prenatal Genetics and Rare Diseases in Children." The event, held on April 19, 2025, was spearheaded by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS Jammu, in collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), the Jammu Obstetrics and Gynecology Society (JOGS), and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Jammu Chapter.
The CME brought together eminent medical professionals and researchers from across India to discuss the latest advancements in prenatal genetic diagnostics and the management of rare genetic disorders in children. The event was inaugurated with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and Saraswati Vandana, led by Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu. In his keynote address, Dr. Gupta underscored the importance of early diagnosis and integrated genetic care in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
The scientific sessions commenced with Dr. Gitanjali Sachdeva, Scientist-G and Director at ICMR-NIRRCH, Mumbai, who delivered a compelling talk on "Advances in Molecular Genetics", highlighting the transformative role of molecular tools in prenatal diagnostics.
Joining virtually, Dr. Madhulika Kabra, Ex-Professor and former Head of the Division of Genetics at AIIMS New Delhi, presented on the "Application of Genomics in Pediatric Practice, Prenatal Diagnosis & Genetic Counseling." Her insights provided a comprehensive overview of the integration of genomic medicine into routine pediatric care.
The final speaker, Dr. Shailesh Pande, Scientist-E at ICMR-NIRRCH, delivered a practical and informative lecture on "Genetic Testing & Counseling in Clinical Practice", emphasizing the role of genetic evaluation in cases of infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and adverse obstetric history.
Organized in association with JOGS-led by Dr. R.C. Sharma (President) and Dr. Manjusha Bajaj (Secretary)-the CME saw participation from over 50 faculty members, residents, and specialists from prestigious medical institutions. The event featured interactive case-based discussions and encouraged collaborative learning and knowledge-sharing.
This academic initiative further reaffirms AIIMS Jammu's dedication to staying at the forefront of medical excellence, particularly in the domain of genetic medicine. By fostering dialogue and education on prenatal and pediatric genetics, AIIMS Jammu is paving the way for a more informed and healthier future for families in Jammu & Kashmir and beyond.
