Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 1: The management committee of Rehan Basera, a shelter home for the urban homeless located at Boria Basti, Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort, Jammu, celebrated International Labour Day with great reverence and community participation. The event paid tribute to the struggles, contributions, and rights of workers, aligning with the global observance that began after the 1886 Chicago Haymarket protest advocating for an 8-hour workday.
I.D. Soni, Incharge of the Old Age Home, Ambphalla, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his address, he reflected on the historical and moral importance of shram (labour) and lauded the role of the working class in building society. Soni, a long-time supporter of Rehan Basera, is also the author of the book "How to Live a Peaceful Life."
Shamlal Basson, former councillor, highlighted the pivotal role of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in shaping India's labour laws. He recounted key legislative milestones, including the Maternity Benefit Bill of 1928, co-authored by Dr. Ambedkar, which was passed in the Bombay Legislative Assembly in 1929. Basson emphasized Ambedkar's advocacy for fair wages, social justice, the right to strike, paid holidays, reduced working hours, and compulsory recognition of trade unions.
Subash Gupta, retired judge, educated the gathering about bonded labour, slavery, and the legal safeguards for both organized and unorganized workers. Known for his social commitment, Gupta has consistently supported the shelter's initiatives.
S. Kuldeep Sudan, law officer and social activist, shared insights into the legal rights of labourers and pledged continued legal assistance for their welfare. Dr. Parveen Yog Raj, retired Chief Medical Officer, shared historical facts about Labour Day and lauded the contributions of the working class. A frequent supporter of Rehan Basera, Dr. Parveen is well regarded for his fact-based advocacy and compassionate service.
Shubam Churangoo and his team also participated, distributing refreshments to the inmates. He shared examples from various welfare schemes and reiterated his support for the labour community.
During the event, several labourers and contractors including Pravansh Kumar, Munish Kumar, Raju, and Roshan were honoured for their dedication and contributions. Dignitaries were felicitated with photographs of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in recognition of their support.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Veena Bakshi, Manager of Rehan Basera, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to all guests and participants. The event was organized by a dedicated team including Sh. Om Prakash, Rita Kumari, Aditya Dutta, Rajni Devi, Veena Devi, Baldev Raj Nargotra, and Bahadur Lal, with a spirit of inclusivity and respect for workers' rights.
