Jammu police tightens noose around drug peddlers
7/3/2025 10:41:36 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 3: Accelerating its war on drugs, Jammu District Police has achieved major milestones in its relentless fight against narcotics in the first half of 2025 (January 1 to June 30). With a multi-pronged strategy focusing on enforcement, awareness, and rehabilitation, the police have delivered substantial blows to the drug ecosystem in the region.
Crackdown on Narco-Crimes: FIRs, Arrests & Seizures
In a robust enforcement drive under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act:
107 FIRs have been registered under the NDPS Act.
150 drug peddlers have been arrested, including several key suppliers.
37 vehicles used in the drug trade have been seized.
83 FIRs pertain specifically to heroin (Chitta) cases, with 122 arrests linked to these.
The police also recovered 1 kg 208 grams of heroin, valued at several crores in the illegal market, showcasing the scale of the narcotics trade and the force's dedicated crackdown on the supply chain.
Zero Tolerance for Habitual Offenders
Demonstrating its no-mercy policy:
7 hardcore drug peddlers have been booked under the stringent PIT NDPS Act (Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act), a provision meant for detaining repeat offenders without immediate trial.
Economic Blow to Drug Syndicates
In a significant step to dismantle the financial machinery of drug traffickers:
Three immovable properties-residential and commercial-worth ?85,70,285 were attached as proceeds of narcotics during the period.
The action sends a strong message to those attempting to profit from illegal drugs that ill-gotten gains will not remain untouched.
Massive Awareness Drive Across District
Believing that education and community engagement are key to long-term change, Jammu Police has also:
Conducted 420 drug awareness programmes, including:
School and college-level debates.
59 Police Community Partnership Group (PCPG) meetings.
60 Thana Diwas events.
Organised over 50 targeted awareness programmes in suspected drug hotspots, along with impactful anti-drug rallies, to awaken public consciousness and gather support from civil society.
Focus on Rehabilitation and De-addiction
Taking a holistic approach, Jammu Police is also actively promoting recovery:
725 patients visited the Out-Patient Department (OPD) and
156 patients received In-Patient (IPD) treatment at the Police Drug De-addiction, Rehabilitation and Mental Health Care Centre in Channi, Jammu this year so far.
The center, initially functional since 2013 at DPL Jammu, was upgraded and shifted to a state-of-the-art facility in March 2024, making it one of the largest and most advanced police-run de-addiction centres in the region.
From 2013 to December 2024, a total of 16,645 patients visited OPD, while 725 received IPD treatment.
In 2024 alone, 1,486 patients sought OPD help, and 156 underwent in-patient care.
Efforts are ongoing to further upgrade facilities to provide modern, humane, and effective treatment to drug addicts.
Public Cooperation: A Call to Action
Jammu Police urges the general public to come forward and assist in curbing the menace.
"If you have information about drug peddling or consumption, please report it on 100 or 112. Your identity will be kept strictly confidential," said a police spokesperson.
With an unwavering resolve, Jammu Police continues to tackle drug abuse from all angles-through strict law enforcement, financial crackdown, massive public outreach, and meaningful rehabilitation. Their achievements in the first six months of 2025 signal a determined march toward a safer, healthier, and drug-free future for the region.
