Rana inaugurates Eco-Stop at Gharana Wetland
7/27/2025 10:40:46 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 27: In a significant step towards enhancing the eco-tourism and strengthening conservation infrastructure, Minister for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Javed Ahmed Rana, today inaugurated the Eco-Stop Building at the Gharana Wetland.
The Minister reiterated Omar Abdullah led Government's firm commitment towards protecting and promoting Jammu & Kashmir's fragile ecosystems.
Describing Gharana Wetland as "not just a wetland, but a living, breathing symbol of ecological balance and natural heritage," Rana emphasized its critical importance as a globally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA). He underscored that its preservation is a"non-negotiable responsibility" that must be embraced by all sections of society.
"The future of our environment is being written by the actions we take today," said Rana. "Wetlands like Gharana are not merely landscapes, they are lifescapes. They nourish livelihoods, regulate water systems, safeguard biodiversity, and are key allies in our fight against climate change."
Commending the Department of Wildlife Protection, the Minister lauded creation of visitor-friendly facilities such as tensile sheds, viewing decks, seating arrangements and informative signage. He said these initiatives reflect a forward-looking approach aimed at making the wetland an accessible, engaging space for students, researchers, tourists and local communities.
Referring to Gharana's rich avian life, Rana highlighted the annual arrival of migratory birds such as the Bar-headed Goose, which travels from Central Asia to this serene habitat. He emphasized that the presence of such species ties Jammu & Kashmir into the fabric of global ecological systems.
"These winged visitors remind us that nature knows no borders. Their arrival is both a marvel of nature and a call to action, for protection, for learning and for pride in our shared natural wealth," the Minister remarked.
Rana called for integration of sustainable tourism models that uplift local communities while preserving the ecological integrity of the site. Gharana has attracted over 40,000 visitors last year.
"We envision Gharana as a premier eco-tourism destination, one that uplifts the local livelihoods while inspiring environmental consciousness," Rana stated.
The Minister extended heartfelt gratitude to the departmental officials, field staff, local communities and all stakeholders whose dedicated efforts have contributed to the conservation of this "ecological jewel."
Calling upon the officers of the Forest Department to further intensify efforts through community-based conservation models, Rana stressed the importance of involving local stakeholders in protection, monitoring and sustainable eco-tourism efforts. He called upon citizens, institutions and youth to join hands in preserving Gharana Wetland for future generations.
Present at the inauguration were Chairperson, DDC Jammu Bharat Bhushan, MLA Suchetgarh, Garu Ram Bhagat, DDC Member, Taranjit Singh Tony, PCCF & HoFF Suresh Kumar Gupta, PCCF (Wildlife) Sarvesh Rai and senior officers of the Forest Department.
